King of the Phaeacians, host of the shipwrecked stranger who will not give his name. His court is the poem's showcase of hospitality done properly: a bath, clothes, a feast, games, gifts, and only then the question of who the guest is. He gives Odysseus the ship that finally carries him home — and is punished for it by Poseidon, who turns the returning vessel to stone in sight of harbour.
