The island of the Phaeacians, a rich and peaceable seafaring people whose ships need no steersman and never come to grief. It is the last stop of the voyage: Odysseus arrives with nothing at all, is fed, clothed and finally asked who he is, and tells the whole story of his wanderings to their king in a single night. They carry him home loaded with gifts — and Poseidon turns their ship to stone as it comes back into harbour.
