The land of the dead beyond the river Oceanus, where the sun never reaches. Odysseus sails there on Circe's instructions to question the ghost of the prophet Teiresias; he digs a trench, fills it with blood, and lets the dead drink so that they can speak. His own mother comes, dead of grief for him; then Agamemnon, murdered the night he got home; then Achilles, who says he would rather be a hired hand on a poor man's farm than king over all the dead. Butler's text calls it the house of Hades.
